To Die or Not to Die

In reading The Bet, discuss your thoughts on the following questions: provide plenty of insight and reasoning.

1) What did the young lawyer gain by sacrificing his time?

2) What is your view of captial punishment?

1)the young lawer gained years to accomplish playing the piano in the second year of confinment then he started studying different languges in the second half of sixth year. in the last two years of his confinement the prisoner read an immense quanity of books quite indiscriminately.

2)my view of capital punishment is like viewing the earth but from a confined amount of space and with strict rules of things of which you can and cant do.

If the lawyer stayed in captivity he would recieve two million dollars.

My view of captial punishment is that noone should be able to take anybody else life reguardless of what they did. to me it's like making it okay to kill someone if they done something bad. I think being locked up in a cell for the rest of your life would be punishment enough.

1.the young lawyer gained that getting the money at the end wasn't worth it that he just didnt want to have the power or he wanted to learn all that he could in his time that he was in his room.
2.My view on capital punishment is that if you did the crime you need to pay the time right? well not really cause if you didnt do that or anything then you shouldnt have to go down that road, but if your framed then more power to you cause you shouldnt be put in that position in the first place.Lol

1.) The lawyer came to realize who wonderful life truly is and how hes yet to see the world beyond what he has know all his life. And so he leaves that he knows behinde him to find the world that he has missed.

2.) My view on captial punishment varies. Somtimes killing a person is a easy way out for the crime the commited when being improsined is much worse punishment, but then some criminals should recive the captial punishment so that they may never cause harm to society again.

He experienced so many things that others had through books, where he would normally not have done it. By not being occupied with the day to day life, he was able to learn much about many things.

Some people will wake up and alter their behavior like the lawyer, they will change through isolation. Those who are still dangerous and won't change could be elected for the death penalty

the lawyer came to notice how life truly is a wonderful thing and should not go to waste. he came to experience so many different things just in his solitary confinedment just by reading all those books.

capital punishment is harsh but if someone did the crime their going to have to pay the time. i also think that capital punishment should be fair and not just blame anyone for any little crime that they did, they need to be punnished for a crime that deserves the capital punishment.

1.He gained knowledge by reading the whole time that many people never acheive over the course of their whole lives
2.Capital punishment should only be used when absolutely necessary and not just given out of anger but careful consideration. Whether or not they deserve it for their crimes you are still taking a human life even if they are the lowlifes of the world

1. He had time to study all these different things. He study all the classics and he started to study gospel. Besides what he study he learn about stuff he didnt know intill he was alone by himself for years. 2. Well my view on captial punishment is this that I would rather stay in jail my whole life then be killed but which one is the right one to do. I think captial punishment or life will accomplishment the same thing. So i would just give then life in prison then kill them. Brad Duplantis

A) the lawyer gained a knowledge of philosophy and theology. he spent a year alone studying the Gospels.

B) capital punishment, in my opinion, is a "just" way to right a wrong done by someone. rather than have them serve time in prison for their crimes, they will just be killed and not even given a chance to change or right their own mistakes. i think everyone deserves a second chance and can change; capital punishment is our government's way of "saving time."

~~**2) i think if you kill someone you should be killed back. i know people shouldnt do GODS work but after they committe a crime that harsh , i personally think they shouldnt be around ... if there are witnesses to the crime you have committed then that should put in the front of the death row ----- venia marie 6th

1. The lawyer got to see what life would be like without people. He also taught himself languages in a shorter time than the average human being.

2. I really do not like the idea of capital punishment. It is a sin to kill someone and it is absolutely wrong. I beleive that if you lock them away in a cell for a long time, then they will realize that what they had done was aboslutely out of line. Killing someone for something that they did is wrong, too.

1. He gained knowlege and the meaning of life. That is why he left all the money behind him because he knew that all the time he spent alone it was all worth it.
2. My view of capital punishment woul be better to stay in jail the rest of my life instead of being killed right away. Staying all my life who knows if one could get pardoned.

1.) By sacrificing his time the lawyer gained a good look at how money doesnt really change anything.

2.) I think that the punishment was kind of stupid on the bankers part because in the end the lawyer learned alot more and was grateful the rhings that he learned and the banker was kind of mad at the fact.

he gain knowledge, an d also got to see the world without seeing it. HE became smart on his own and also wise. he learn about things through books then anyother person around even while being in jail.

I think capital punishment is when u get sentance for something you did and get punished for it. If you kill some one yopub should get punished. if you can kill someone you can also get the same feeling but maybe even worse

1.The lawyer gained a lot of education from the books he read as well as...he learned that money isn't everything and he didn't even want the money anymore after being inprisoned for 15 years.
2. I think that it is right for people who have done horrible crimes. and only if they can be proved because, maybe innocent people go to jail.

The toung lawyer didn't ganin anything, he didn't what the cash.

that it was cruel, that the banker was holding the lawyer for 15 years.

1.) I think he found other things to do with the time he spent those 15 years in solitude, he was able to learn things that he most likely wouldn't have thought of learning other wise, for example,he was able to learn different languages, and also gained knowledge of philosophy .
2.) in some ways i do think capitalist punishment is a good thing, like they make people realize the damage that they done, they took someone's life away, and so there's were taking away as a result, but they have to live through the fact that they will go no where as long as they are in jail, in someways it bad for example just the way i think even for someone who did something horrible as killing another person it may put a strain on the mental health for having to be in jail for so long.....

1. The lawyer gained a sense of accomplishment and insight by sacrificing his time in imprisonment. He realised that certian people in society base their purpose on earth soley to gain money.

2. My view on capital punishment is that people should be punished equally for the crime they have committed. I don't want to get into in gory details or examples but people should get what they deserve. Yes, every case is different, but the same rule applies.

1)Well, one of the most important things that the the lawyer gained was all the knowledge, that he got during all the years that he spent sacrificing his entire life in imprisoment.

2)Because there are several important factors that influence the goverment to have capital punishment. In part, I think capital punishment is fair, because real crimminals really deserved it.Therefore, they most pay for theif crime. Rules are rules and one most follow them. But, in other side it's also a cruel punishment.

By sacrificing his time the lawyer learned how being deprived of human interaction could make some one lonely.

I think that capital punishment is a great thing and should be extended to other crimes as well.

1) I believe the lawyer gained a lot from being in solituded for 15 years. One of the things is that he was able to study many different languages. Another, was that he read and studied different religions and beliefs. I also believe he realized who he really was. These are just some of the things I believe he gained from being in confinement for 15 years.

2) Capital punishment is very important to our justice system. It is something no one wants to go through. I believe capital punishment should actually be harsher than it already is though. I have no respect for the people that are sentence to capital punishment, for this means they are really bad people. So all in all I definitely agree with capital punishment and think it necessary in our justice system.

1. I don't think he gained anything from his time in the room. It seems it was just a waste of time, and his life is nearly over once he got out.

2. My view on capital punishment is that the person that committed the crime should have the same punishment as everyone else that has done wrong.

I think it is crazy that a guy would go 15 years without communication with and body just for money. But on the other hand this guy got to learn a lot of more interesting things that he would not have learned if he didnt.

I think capital nessary due to the situation. I think people should pay for the crime they commit. I dont think the government shouldnt make a big deal of a little situation though

(1) i beleive that he gained useless knowledge. because he didnt get to use it

(2) on capital punishment i dont like it really. i dont think either ways are very moral, and look very painful for the inmates. i understand that they want to punish them but its not our place to condem someone to death.

Anonymous said...

By sacrificing his time, the lawyer realized how petty things can be. He realized that some of the things that he once cared about and no more meaning.

My view on capital punishment varies. Depending on the crime and different variables. It would just depend on who, what, when, where, and what circumstances.

1) The lawyer, in a way, gained knowledge and wisdom, although he now abhors it.

2) I am not sure about capital punishment.

In a way, death immediately would be worse because eternity in hell would be far worse than any life in prison. But yet, if they get life in prison, they may eventually get to know God and be saved. They would end up in heaven instead of hell.

But if they are not saved, life in solidtary may drive a prisoner insane, not to mention the costs of having to support that prisoner for the rest of their life, while immediate death is much cheaper.

Oops! Forgot something.

Is it really our place to condemn a person to death? I think that perhaps it should be left up to God.

1) NOOOO I deleted my initial AWESOME post. This one is going to be stupid:
The young lawyer realized after his fifteen years of solitary confinement, and after teaching himself so many things, that no amount of money would change all of the things that he hated about this world. If I remember right, materialism didn't matter to him at all.

2) In all honesty, I don't think much about capital punishment (the death penalty). At one time I realized that most people would rather be sentenced to death than sentenced to life in prison. Knowing this fact, I decided that if the crime committed was bad enough, the ultimate punishment would be life in prison. I believe that punishment should be based on what the offender likes and doesn't like. If they would rather be put to death, lock them up. It's worse on them that way.

I think that what he did its kind like retired, because how u will stay in a room for 15 years. In one way is good, that he did not have to pay nothing.

The young lawyer gained a lots of knowledge.
I think is a harsh punishment because to spend 15 years in a room is kind of the same with spending 15 in prison.

well the main thing that the younge man gained by sacrificing so much time was knowlege and I mean a hole lot of it he also had a lot of time to ponder on religous beliefs and his beliefs of the outside world because although he was locked up for a long time he had still been out in the world long enough to get a grasp on was human nature is like

I am against it because like they said in the story I am not God nor do I have the right to decide wheather a man gets to live or not

1) the lawyer learned everything about himself. He gained a lot of knowledge from reading most of the time.
2)I don't really have to much to say about capital punishment. I think someone should just be put in jail for life if what they did was really that bad. That way they have all their life to think about the mistake that they made.

1) I don't think the lawyer really gained anything from sacrifacing his time. He probably learned an immense amount of self-restraint but that's really about it.
2) Truthfully, I've never given too much thought to capital punishment. My view has always been 'if you do something, deal with the consequence', therefore I don't disagree with the death penalty. While I do in fact understand why some people oppose of it(because they feel that no one but God should control human life), I am a firm believer in karma. Aside from that, I figure that keeping the prisoners alive would cost tax payers more money but I don't know for a fact. I just feel that if someone decides to go on a murder rant, then you might as get rid of them. I'm not saying that my opinion is right, that's just the way I feel about it.
